Berber carpets originally come from the Atlas, a North African mountain range, where the oldest surviving Berber carpets were made around the beginning of the 19th century. Today their production takes place mainly in countries like Tunis, Algeria and Morocco. According to tradition, Berber carpets are hand-knotted from new wool. The white color of the Berber carpets is also derived from the nature of the sheep. The wool is very thick and is knotted with a small number of knots. As a rule, Berber carpets are robust, hard-wearing and not very patterned due to the small number of knots. Their quality can be described as warming and beneficial. In addition, they repel dirt very well. The carpets are made with the so-called "Berber knot" or the Turkish knot. Due to the craftsmanship used, there may well be color deviations and Berber carpets can also vary in size. The style of each individual Berber is therefore often unique and unmistakable. Berber carpets cannot be compared with oriental carpets, because their type is too thick and soft for that and they are also heavier than oriental carpets. In addition, Berber carpets are knotted with significantly coarser yarn. Traditionally, Berber carpets were and are still offered today in the Arab markets, the souks. As a result, they are also known as soukh rugs, among other things.
